See the “link” below and then IMAGINE: After you ask and determine that your patient bought — or is intending to buy — cheapo sun from anywhere other than your dispensary, you direct conversation, advise and prescribe Plano Sun for CL, non Rx and NVO patients to be filled in your dispensary.

Do this sincerely and simply because “Ms. Jones, as the watch dog for your present and future vision, do NOT under any circumstances buy ‘off-the-rack’ sunglasses (ever again)! They are not approved by the American Optometric Association. And they are not even regulated.  The DANGER is you increase the risk of cumulative damage to the nerve tissue of the retina, that part of your eye responsible for creating the picture your brain sees of your world. A substandard sun lens will actually do more harm than good, as your dilated eye will let in more of the bad UV radiation than with no sunglasses at all. I want you in sunglasses.  I can be absolutely sure you will NOT risk your sight! One thing I am critically aware of is none of my patients want to outlive their vision and we are the vigilant gatekeepers for your lifelong best eye health and sight. Does this make perfect sense to you? Any questions about this? OK, my optician will provide you with choices and fill my advice for you and we’ll both have peace-of-mind?”

If this is a CL patient, you may say, “In addition to ordering your yearly supply of CLs today, because I want you to have lenses on hand and ready to wear, what education have you had regarding off-the-rack sunglasses? You’re going to need non-Rx sunglasses and I’m going to prescribe those for you today, too. CLs will create a brighter more reflective world and I need to completely neutralize all blinding glare for you, safely. Does that make sense to you? I want them to feel like a ’soothing oasis for your eyes’ in the heat and the sun.”

Give conscious thought to what you want your patients to have and understand the importance that they purchase from you. Trust me, patients leave with their Rx because they think all lenses will correct their sight the way they saw in your exam suite. If you haven’t challenged your patient dialog in a while it could probably be improved for best results and patient capture.

If you believe in your knowledge, skill and products, make a list and work the 3 minute dialog with advice and prescriptions and ask if your advice makes sense! Opticians will then simply follow doctor advice and direct patient in a matter-of-fact dialog.
